HANG 10 WITH KATE

image

Fun Fact - did you know Kate has synesthesia? She sees letters and numbers in color.

HANG 10!

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was little, I wanted to be a mom/artist/teacher. When I was a teenager, I wanted to be in entertainment – I spent a lot of time watching classic movies with my dad. And at some point, I remember distinctly telling someone I wanted to be a yéyé girl when I grew up. That’s at once super embarrassing and super Kate at seventeen!

Who do you look up to?

I look up to a lot of people! I’ve been surrounded by some very wonderful people in my life. Recently, I’m really looking up to a mentor of mine, a friend called Jessica. I’ve known her for nearly six years - I started interning for her at A.P.C. as a freshman at NYU. She’s meticulous and organized, calm and respectful – really leads by example.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

I was at an event celebrating David Bailey, and was chatting with a woman at our table about my studies. She was very interested, and told me you always have to ask – ask for the first meeting, ask for the job you want – because no one is a mind reader, the perfect opportunity doesn’t just fall from the sky, and the worst thing they can say is no! Or not reply…

That one’s really stuck with me.

How have you changed in the past year, and how do you hope to change in the next?

SO much has changed in the past year! Last year was a weird one – my computer was stolen, I was sick on my birthday (sounds petty, but really was a meh way to start the year). I was very unhappy in a way I didn’t even realize. In the fall, I left my job in fashion – I took some time off to re-evaluate what I want and what’s important to me. I’ve changed the way I define success, that’s for sure!

For the next year, I hope to keep moving in the direction I’ve started since the new year – much more present in what’s happening right now, planning for the next step, and remembering the past without being stuck in it with nostalgia. I’m excited to see what’s next…

What do you love about what you do?

Right now, I’m working as a freelancer – I love working with new people and learning about what they do, and I love having a flexible schedule. And of course, I love working on kate & tito – putting together the interesting stuff I find on the internet is a perfect way to be creative and feel connected.

What is your idea of the perfect day (or night)?

There are so many ideal days! But lately, I love having a free Tuesday. A solo visit to a museum or garden, a perfume hunt at Barney’s, plus a movie then dinner with friends… pretty wonderful. To me, a free weekday in Manhattan is the ultimate luxury.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

There are three places that are really important to me: Los Angeles (where I’m from), Paris (where I first felt independent), and New York (where I currently live, and where I feel perfectly situated between my other two favorite cities). It would be really hard for me to see myself living anywhere outside of these cities for an extended amount of time. That being said, I love to travel! But I love coming home nearly as much.

What are your favorite places in your neighborhood?

Living in Williamsburg, there are a ton of great places. But my top three would have to be:

Margo Patisserie Café

Everything is always fresh and delicious! In the morning, there is nothing more perfect than a warm madeleine and a latte. For lunch, I particularly love their brie and pear sandwich. Plus the staff is really sweet :)

Primp & Polish

I’m a total girly girl, and Primp & Polish does the BEST manicures. Seriously, they last without chipping over a week. The staff is super friendly, and the whole vibe is really fun and relaxing.

Williamsburg Cinemas

When this movie theater (finally) opened this winter, I was thrilled. It’s awesome to have a theater so nearby, plus every Tuesday and Thursday, all tickets are only $8! Unreal.

If you had three wishes…

Aside from the obvious world peace, an end to world hunger, etc…

The ability to travel regularly, the ability to work independently, and to learn another language! (Italian? German? Japanese?)

Last word!

“Mujer”

by William Carlos Williams

Oh, black Persian cat!

Was not your life

already cursed with offspring?

We took you for rest to that old

Yankee farm, — so lonely

and with so many field mice

in the long grass —

and you return to us

in this condition —!

Oh, black Persian cat.

HANG 10 WITH TITO

image

Fun Fact - did you know Tito’s real name is Adrien?

Here we go, let’s HANG 10…

1.     When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was little, I really admired my youngest uncle, my mother’s brother. He was the cool and young uncle, and he was a dentist…so I wanted to be a dentist.

2.     Who do you look up to?

My sister and my brother. They both have wonderful families and successful careers doing what they like, I truly hope I’ll follow their path in my own way.

3.     What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

I just left my job in finance to pursue personal projects and get closer to what really matters to me.

Pretty unexpectedly when I let my boss know I wanted to quit, he was very supportive and told me it is important in life to listen to your heart, love what you do and do what you love.

4.     How have you changed in the past year, and how do you hope to change in the next?

I think that over the last year, by working in an environment where I didn’t fit, I learned a lot about myself. I learned about what I don’t want to be, about what I don’t want to do and about what really matters to me. In the coming year I hope I’ll succeed in applying those theoretical conclusions to the real life. After a long reflection it’s time for action.

5.     What do you love about what you do?

As a photographer, I love capturing the instant, love, beauty, friendship, happiness, honesty, kids - the simple things. This is also why 99% of my photos are B&W and not post-edited (apart from what I can do in the darkroom). I feel like this way I stick to reality, no cheating.

6.     What is your idea of the perfect day (or night)?

Well, I love spending time with close friends…I have a winter version and a summer version:

In the winter, a perfect day would be somewhere in the Alps, at a cozy chalet, waking-up early and watching the sunrise while having a nice warm latte. Going for a long hiking/touring from the forest to the top, sharing a lunch with a breathtaking view. Enjoying the freedom of skiing down untouched slopes all the way down to the village. Setting up a nice fire to enjoy after-ski hot chocolate, reading, and taking a little nap by the fireplace. Warm bath, then a long and nice dinner, till late night.

In the summer, a perfect day would be somewhere in northern Brazil. A very simple house, little garden with hammocks…Waking-up very early to go watch the sunrise and meditate. Freshly picked fruits, cake and coffee by the garden.

Then, a long walk through the jungle to a hidden lagoon to rest, read, swim and chat. Then a ride back home on a small boat, first stopping far from the coast to dive in the fresh water and watch the sunset. Some grilled fish for dinner, then dancing in the streets to local music late into the night.

Now I want a vacation!

7.     If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

In the countryside, close by a big city.

8.     What are your favorite places in your neighborhood?

In my neighborhood, my favorite places are:

The Japanese stand in the Marché des Enfants Rouges

Chez Nénesse for traditional French fare

Empenadas at Classico Argentino

Cocktails and Tacos at Candelaria

La Rue de la Corderie

The hidden garden behind the Swedish Institute (please don’t tell, it’s a secret!)

9.     If you had three wishes…

Make THE BIG PROJECT happen with Kate – a large space, several floors, workshops, movies, darkroom, gallery, design pieces, clothes, leather goods, fragrances, gatherings. Creating and sharing.

10.Last word!

Was afraid in the beginning answering the “10 Minutes” question because 1) I hate writing 2) I am pretty shy when it comes to speaking about myself, but in the end I had a good in time!

HANG 10

To go along with some of the changes around here, we want to introduce a new series - “HANG 10”!

We ask people all over the world 10 questions, so even if we aren’t in the same room, it’s like 10 minutes of hanging out :)

This week, we are going to introduce ourselves to our new readers (Hi new readers, we see you!), and start off the HANG 10 series.

We hope you will enjoy!

LA MONTRE PREMIERE

Fashion Month may be at wrapping up for the season, but we have some catching up to do when it comes to la mode.

Chanel, the godmother of chic, has a talent for keeping things contemporary. They have some of the ultimate online content – their digital presence, as their quilted classics, sets a standard. Who could forget this clip? Or this one? Yeah, that’s what I thought…SWOON.

Well, they’ve done it again…mais bien sûr! Not only is the video killer, the website itself if pretty awesome, too. As you scroll, the gears and gizmos come together to create: LA MONTRE PREMIERE.
